Fact #78: Steve King’s legitimate endorsement
Congressman Steve King has represented Iowa for ten years. He says he shares Iowans’ values, but his record and his statements over the years paint a different picture.
Over the weekend Congressman and Senate candidate Todd Akin grabbed headlines for claiming that victims of “legitimate rape” rarely get pregnant:
AKIN: If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
What do these absurd comments have to do with Congressman Steve King? Well, Akin won a competitive Republican primary this year with the help of King, who continued his efforts to build a national profile by endorsing and campaigning on behalf of Akin in Missouri. In fact, here’s King speaking about his fondness of Akin in April:
1:57 KING: “He’s a statesman, he’s a patriot, he’s a proven conservative. And I’ve watched it. He lives it. We’ve sat side by side now into the tenth year, together.”
So the question becomes, does Congressman King agree with Akin that “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down”? If he doesn’t, does he still stand by his endorsement and steadfast support?
We hope Congressman King will join fellow Republicans like Mitt Romney and denounce these horrible comments.
