Fact #109: King supported cutting $33 billion from SNAP because he didn’t “think that people are going to starve”
Does Congressman King really think Iowans want to slash funding for SNAP? Not only does the program help families in need, it sends sixteen cents of every dollar to farmers like those across the 4th District.
While the House version of the farm bill is set to cut $16.5 billion from the program, King voted earlier this year to slash $33 billion from the program. Even more irresponsible was King’s reason for supporting the cut. King told the House Agriculture Committee, “I don’t think that people are going to starve.”
Comments like this only lead to gridlock and partisanship in Washington and fail to create common ground on an issue. As a result of the gridlock in Washington the House continues to refuse to even consider moving the farm bill forward.
Iowa deserves a leader who will work across party lines to protect farmers and the rural communities in the 4th District, not make outrageous comments that prevent a serious debate.
